The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
