The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
