Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
