European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
