British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
